Israel: A heavy rock and a cup of terror

Friday, June 4th, 2010

(June 3, 2010) Israel is once again in the world’s spotlight. Last week, a flotilla of six ships apparently carrying a cargo of humanitarian aid to the people living in the Gaza Strip expressed their (political) intention to run an Israeli blockade off the coast of Gaza. The following video shows what happened when Israeli commandos boarded one of the ships:

In the immediate aftermath, world condemnation of Israel followed (Gaza flotilla attack: world unites in condemnation of Israel’s actions). The London newspaper The Guardian reports:

“Amid a flurry of diplomatic activity, Israeli ambassadors were summoned in Stockholm, Madrid, and Athens, while Spain, holding the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union, called a session of the EU’s political and security committee.

Foreign governments deplored the loss of life and voiced outrage at the Israeli conduct. But amid a propaganda war between the Israeli government press machine and pro-Palestinian lobbies over who started the fight and whether any of the activists on board were armed, they were also wary of going further than verbal condemnation.

The common response in Europe was to condemn what was seen as Israel’s disproportionate use of force. Even Germany, generally reluctant to criticize Israel because of the Holocaust, voiced horror at what Palestinian leaders dubbed a massacre.”

This article also states:

“The United Nations security council was expected to meet last night in New York over the incident. ‘I heard the ships were in international water. That is very bad,’ said Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general.”

In response to the criticism that Israel unjustifiably stopped these ships in international waters, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the following statement on their website (The Gaza flotilla and the maritime blockade of Gaza – Legal background):

1. A maritime blockade is in effect off the coast of Gaza. Such blockade has been imposed, as Israel is currently in a state of armed conflict with the Hamas regime that controls Gaza, which has repeatedly bombed civilian targets in Israel with weapons that have been smuggled into Gaza via the sea.

2. Maritime blockades are a legitimate and recognized measure under international law that may be implemented as part of an armed conflict at sea.

3. A blockade may be imposed at sea, including in international waters, so long as it does not bar access to the ports and coasts of neutral states.

After the raid Israel’s President, Shimon Peres, issued an accurate assessment of his country’s place in the world (President salutes soldiers wounded in IDF raid on Gaza flotilla ‘in name of entire State of Israel’):

“‘Israel is going through a difficult time, and to my regret there is a structural majority against Israel in the UN,’ President Shimon Peres said Thursday during a visit to soldiers wounded in the IDF raid on the Gaza flotilla. ‘It doesn’t matter what we do – and of course this is not a majority of justice. There is no way of passing logical and positive resolutions regarding the Middle East with the Arab lobby in the UN,’ he said.”

U.N., Israel, the World, and the NPT

Last week there was another story concerning Israel that also had a disturbing quality to it. On Friday May 28, 189 member states of the United Nations who are signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) agreed to work towards a nuclear weapons free zone in the Middle East (UN talks back conference on nuclear-free Middle East). However, this BBC article highlights the true nature of this agreement:

“The unanimously agreed [upon] document also said that Israel should sign the NPT. US President Barack Obama backed the deal but said he was ‘strongly opposed’ to Israel being singled out…An Israel official later denounced the document as ‘hypocrisy’…’Only Israel is mentioned, while the text is silent about other countries like India, Pakistan and North Korea, which have nuclear arms, or even more seriously, Iran, which is seeking to obtain them,’ a senior government official told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.”

This development has Israel understandably concerned and angry (Israel recoils as US backs nuclear move):

“Washington’s unprecedented backing for a UN resolution for a nuclear-free Middle East that singles out Israel has both angered and deeply worried the Jewish state although officials are cagey about openly criticising their biggest ally. The resolution adopted by the United Nations on Friday calls on Israel to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and urges it to open its facilities to inspection. It also calls for a regional conference in 2012 to advance the goal of a nuclear-free Middle East.”

Like many of the UN resolutions throughout the years this agreement seeks to weaken Israel’s defensive capabilities and deterrents and eventually put them at the mercy of their Arab enemies. The really disturbing part is that, President Obama’s tepid objection notwithstanding, America sided with the rest of the world in a process that seeks to undermine Israel’s security.

Turkey and Israel

There is one other aspect to the Gaza Flotilla story that may have prophetic ramifications. As a result of this incident relations between Israel and Turkey are rapidly deteriorating as this NPR article states (Once Close Allies, Israel, Turkey Clash On Raid):

“Israel’s raid on a pro-Palestinian flotilla of aid ships has drawn criticism from across the globe, but nowhere more severe or damaging than in Turkey, until recently one of its closest allies.

The Turkish-registered ship Marmara was the target of the Israeli commando raid that left nine people dead and dozens more wounded. Eight of those killed were Turkish nationals; a ninth had dual U.S.-Turkish citizenship. Fury over their deaths has led to the biggest crisis in Israeli-Turkey relations in years.”

In his 2008 book God’s War on Terror Walid Shoebat wrote that he believed Turkey plays a central role during the Tribulation Period. He also said that he thinks the Gog of Ezekiel’s prophecy (ch. 38-39) is the Antichrist. I wrote a synopsis of his book in my website article Islam and End-Times prophecy. In the section on Turkey I paraphrased seven reasons Mr. Shoebat thinks that Turkey has a significant role in the End-Times:

1.Ezekiel ch.38 lists eight locations in the Gog prophecy. Five of them (Magog, Meshech, Tubal, Togarmah, Gomer) are located in Turkey.

2.The first Islamic Empire (which culminated with the Turkish Ottoman Empire whose capital was Istanbul, Turkey) is the fatally wounded seventh Biblical Beast Empire of Revelation ch.17.

3.Daniel ch.9 declares the people of the prince will invade Jerusalem. The first part of this prophecy was fulfilled when the Roman army led by the Tenth Legion destroyed the second Jewish Temple in 70 A.D. This legion consisted of primarily Turkish and Syrian soldiers.

4.Daniel ch.11 prophesies of a “king of the north” as a type of the Antichrist. Antiochus Epiphanes IV ruled the Seleucid Empire which encompassed Turkey. He blasphemously sacrificed a pig on the Jewish Temple altar and was a forerunner of the Antichrist.

5.Isaiah and Micah prophesied of The Assyrian who is the Antichrist. Assyria’s domain included a large part of Turkey.

6.Zechariah ch.9 lists Yavan/Ionia (Turkey) as playing a role in the Last Days. They are translated with the word “Greece” in this passage but are actually located on the Western coast of Turkey.

7.Revelation ch.2 mentions that the throne of Satan is located in Pergamum, Turkey. (God’s War on Terror; p.421-425)

Whether or not the current crisis in Israel/Turkey relations leads to the fulfillment of Mr. Shoebat’s End-Times scenario is unknown. Only time will tell.

Zechariah 12

Contrary to those skeptics who have denigrated the Bible throughout the centuries, there are many reasons for believing it is the true word of God. There are the billions of lives that have been changed by the spiritual truths about life and salvation contained in it. Archaeology has proven time and time again that the Bible is historically accurate. I also believe that it is scientifically accurate and don’t believe the supernatural elements of it are inconsistent with an omnipotent God who created the universe and the scientific laws that allow it to exist. Since God is the Creator He is also able to transcend these laws according to His will. One other area of Biblical accuracy is found in its prophetic passages because God states that He is God and that He declares the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46). He foretold hundreds of prophecies that His Son Jesus the Messiah fulfilled 2000 years ago. Likewise He has given hundreds of prophecies that foretell of what will happen in the End-Times. One of these is found in the Book of the prophet Zechariah:

“1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. 2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. 3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” (Zechariah 12:1-3)

God says that one day all the world will come against Jerusalem in Israel because He will make it a burdensome stone and a cup of trembling or terror to the world. At no time in earth’s history has the whole world come against Jerusalem. Since the rebirth of Israel in 1948, the world has become globally connected and has become increasingly hostile to the nation of Israel. The signs that Jesus told His followers to watch for could be in their nascent stages. Only the One who declares the end from the beginning knows when it will start but it will happen at some point in the future because God declared it would.

President Obama, like every other President, is wrong on Israel

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

(April 17, 2010) The New York Times reports that President Obama is initiating a “far-reaching shift in how the United States views the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and how aggressively it might push for a peace agreement.” (Obama Phrase Highlights Shift on Middle East) The article states, “Mr. Obama said conflicts like the one in the Middle East ended up “costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure” — drawing an explicit link between the Israeli-Palestinian strife and the safety of American soldiers as they battle Islamic extremism and terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.” It also notes that both General Petraeus and Condoleezza Rice shared a similar position on the Middle East conflict with the Obama administration. The article does point out that Israelis themselves question the efficacy of any peace agreement with the Palestinians, “The sense of urgency in Washington comes just as many Israelis have become disillusioned with the whole idea of resolving the conflict. Mr. Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition government has long been skeptical about the benefits of a peace deal with the Palestinians. But skepticism has taken root in the Israeli public as well, particularly after Israel saw little benefit from its traumatic withdrawal from Gaza in 2005.”

The issue that stands out to me is that every U.S. administration looks for a political solution to solve this dilemma. The problem is that the basis for the Arab-Israeli conflict is not political but religious in nature. What is the truth about the Arab-Israeli conflict?

Religious Jews

The Jews’ sole claim to the land comes from the Bible where God promised them the land of Israel forever. He did help the Jews conquer the land from the Canaanites and they lived there for the next eleven centuries. The United Nations, a political organization, did authorize their return to the land but only because their biblical history claims this as their land. The modern Zionist movement and its founder Theodor Herzl suggested Madagascar, Uganda, Cyprus, or Argentina as possible future homelands for the Jews. Yet they had no significant historical connection to any of these countries. The religious Jews declared that only the biblical land of Canaan/Israel would suffice as a homeland for the Jews. In the eyes of religious Jews the legitimacy of the Jews’ claim to the land of Israel does not come from the United Nations authority but from God’s promises in the Tanakh or Old Testament.

Religious Muslims

The Muslim prophet Muhammad was born in the 6th Century A.D. The Islamic religion began with him and in the following centuries the Muslims conquered many lands including the land of Israel. They continued ruling the land of Israel (with a few exceptions) until 1948 when the modern nation of Israel was created. Since then they have battled the Israelis for control of the land. Just like the religious Jews believe God gave them the land, so too the fundamentalist Muslims believe that Allah gave them the land. There are two religious concepts in Islam that have a tremendous if not the sole impact on the Arab side of this modern conflict. They are Dar al-Harb and Dar al-Islam. I discussed these two concepts in my article Why There will never be peace in Israel until the Messiah returns:

“There are two concepts in Islam that will never allow Israel to have peace until the Messiah returns. The first is Dar al-Islam which means House of Islam or House of Submission. Its adherents are made up of Muslim extremists. Dar al-Islam refers to countries where the law of Islam prevails and an Islamic government rules. Non-Muslims may live there under subjugation. Dar al-Harb means House of War and refers to those countries that are not under Islamic rule. It also refers to those lands which were once Islamic but were conquered by non-Muslims. The lands that are not Muslim are not legitimate because they are not under the authority of Allah. In the case of Israel those Muslims who subscribe to Dar al-Harb believe that the Jews are living on land that Allah gave to Islam. Therefore it is a disgrace to Islam and can only be rectified by Israel returning to Islamic rule. The Muslims riot over cartoons depicting their prophet Muhammad because it is a dishonor to him. How much more will they fight to regain Israel since it is a dishonor to Allah. No matter how many moderate Muslims may want peace with Israel the Islamic hardliners can never allow Israel to exist. Under Dar al-Harb treaties and truces may be made but only with the goal of eventually retaking the land that once was under Islamic rule. Since Israeli soldiers swear an oath declaring “Never again” will they be brought under the power of another government, they will never stop fighting to keep Israel.”

The Political Solution

There is a belief among a lot of world leaders that if the Israelis give up enough land they can achieve peace with the Palestinians. Some of these leaders think the Israelis should withdraw to the pre-1967 borders that were politically drawn up after the 1949 armistice to end Israel’s War of Independence against the Arab armies. This means that Israel would give up the Golan Heights to Syria, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem including the Temple Mount and the Western Wall.  The Jews waited more than 1800 years to return to Jerusalem. Every one of those 1800 years they ended the Passover seder with the words “Next year in Jerusalem”. In 1967 they finally realized that dream and to expect them to give it up now is ludicrous.

From the Arab point of view the return of the “occupied” territories would not suffice to meet their religious requirements. They believe Allah gave them the entire land of Israel and therefore will accept nothing less:  “As long as Hezbollah exists, it will never recognise Israel.” – leader of Lebanon’s Islamist Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah March 14, 2009.”  (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7943357.stm)  Under Dar al-Harb they have no choice but to acquire all of the land of Israel in order to restore honor to Allah. The history of the Palestinian Authority (PA) will prove this to be the case.

The Palestinian Authority was formed after the Oslo Peace agreement of 1993. Previously it had been known as Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) which was created in 1964. Why is this of the utmost significance? Because in 1964 the Arabs occupied the West Bank, the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. They didn’t lose these lands until three years later during the 1967 Six Day War. This then begs the question: “What lands were they trying to liberate in 1964?” The obvious answer is they were eventually hoping to liberate all the land of Israel from the Jews. This of course falls in line with the religious concept of Dar al-Harb.

Political leaders who try to force a peace agreement on Israel with the Palestinians by causing them to give up more land are engaging in a futile endeavor. The Israelis unilaterally withdrew from parts of Gaza in 2005. The terrorist organization Hamas moved in and  began firing rockets into Israel. There is no political solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The Religious Solution

There is no temporal religious solution because both the Jews and Muslims claim the land of Israel was given to them by Jehovah and Allah respectively. In 1993, on the White House lawn, both Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO leader Yasser Arafat proclaimed Jerusalem as the eternal capital of their people. I told my wife that day this meant the Oslo Peace Accord was a sham because the status of Jerusalem would not be solved by this agreement. However, at some point in the future a global leader will arise and seemingly solve the Arab-Israeli conflict in general and the Jerusalem situation in particular. How he accomplishes this feat is not entirely clear. The Bible indicates that this man will be a great orator and have some kind of supernatural powers or at least the appearance of them. He will deceive the world with a false agenda of peace and the world will follow after him. Once he reveals his true nature global chaos will ensue. The chaos will end with the second coming of Jesus and at that time He will solve the Arab-Israeli conflict by setting up His kingdom in Jerusalem and ruling the world from there. Both Arabs and Jews will then know that He is the Messiah and follow Him. Until that time though, American presidents will continue to try and force peace on Israel and they will fail.

Arab League: End of the Middle East Peace Process?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

(March 27, 2010) Amr Moussa, chief of the Arab League which was formed in 1945 and now consists of twenty-two Arab nations, warned that Israel’s recent settlement declarations could bring a final end to the Middle East Peace process. (Amr Moussa: We must prepare for failure of peace process) The Jerusalem Post article reports, “Amr Moussa urged an Arab leadership summit in Libya on Saturday to forge a new strategy to pressure Israel, saying the peace process could not be ‘an open ended process.’

‘We must prepare for the possibility that the peace process will be a complete failure,’ Moussa said. ‘This is the time to stand up to Israel. We must find alternative options, because the situation appears to have reached a turning point.’

Speaking at the event, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said there would be no peace agreement without ending the occupation of Palestinian land, first and foremost east Jerusalem. He accused Prime Minster Binyamin Netanyahu’s government of trying to create a de facto situation in Jerusalem that would torpedo any future peace settlement.

Abbas added that conflict in Jerusalem was dangerous and could ignite the entire Middle East. He said the PA would not resume peace talks with Israel, including indirect talks, until Israel stops construction in the settlements.”

What alternative options to the peace process the Arab League would choose is unknown. In the past Yasser Arafat invoked Intifadas or Arab uprisings in order to disrupt everyday life in Jerusalem. At the extreme the Arab League could decide that the only way to win against Israel is through military confrontation, something they’ve tried unsuccessfully several times in the past. Eventually there will be an Arab invasion of Israel according to biblical prophecy (see my article The Coming Invasion of Israel).

The idea that the “peace process” could ever lead to peace in Israel has been a sham from the beginning. I wrote an article for my website titled Why There will never be peace in Israel until the Messiah returns in which I show why the peace process is fraudulent:

Dar al-Islam and Dar al-Harb means no peace in Israel

There are two concepts in Islam that will never allow Israel to have peace until the Messiah returns. Since Israeli soldiers swear an oath declaring “Never again” will they be brought under the power of another government, they will never stop fighting to keep Israel.

Palestine Liberation Organization and the Recognition of Israel

One of the main requirements of any peace treaty between the Arabs and Israel is that the Arabs have to recognize that the state of Israel has a right to exist on their land. The problem is that for Muslim extremists to declare that Israel has a right to live on their land it would lead to a couple of unacceptable ramifications for them. Either Allah made a mistake in giving the land to Islam in the first place or they are willing to allow Allah to remain dishonored by not regaining the land he gave them. Thus, the Muslim extremists will never be able to truly recognize Israel even if they return to the pre-1967 borders. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was formed in 1964, three years before the 1967 Six Day War. At that time the Arabs controlled the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. This then begs the question, “What part of Palestine were they trying to liberate” in 1964? The only part they didn’t control was the land ceded to Israel by the United Nations in 1947 and the armistice agreement of 1949. In 1978 Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat made a separate peace agreement with Israel. This led to his assassination in 1981 by a Muslim extremist group known as Islamic Jihad. Yasser Arafat, who became the head of the PLO in 1969, during the late 1980s and 1990s declared that he would recognize Israel if a two state solution was created. However, in 2000 he rejected a peace offer that a lot of observers thought was an excellent deal in that it gave the Palestinians almost 97 percent of the land they requested. Since then there has been much conflict between the two sides. As long as there are Muslim extremists who subscribe to the concept of Dar al-Harb true peace will not exist in Israel until Jesus Christ returns to govern the world from Jerusalem.

In 1993 my wife and I watched Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin shake hands on the White House lawn. They both made speeches during that event proclaiming Jerusalem as the eternal capital of their respective lands. I told my wife at that time this meant their peace agreement was meaningless. Neither side can ever give up Jerusalem to the other side. Thus, there will never be peace in the Middle East until Jesus Christ returns to make Jerusalem the capital of His global kingdom.

Pastor Rich Nathan of Vineyard vs Christian Zionism

Monday, January 25th, 2010

(January 25, 2010) While surfing the web I came across an email that Pastor Rich Nathan of the Vineyard Columbus church sent to his congregation in 2006. It concerned the Middle East peace process and the Arab-Israeli conflict. I have visited Pastor Nathan’s church a few times and was impressed by the work that he and his congregation are doing to help those in need and their desire to further the kingdom of God. However, the one area of disagreement I have with Pastor Nathan is in the realm of biblical prophecy and the nation of Israel. The email he sent to his congregation highlights some of the areas of this disagreement. Therefore I will respond to the various points discussed in this email, some of which I agree with and others I don’t. I will post the entire email below with my responses interspersed in blue font.

Can There Be Peace In The Middle East?

Recent events in the Middle East have led many to wonder whether there can be any framework for peace between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East. The Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has repeatedly made controversial statements questioning the Holocaust, and criticized European laws against Holocaust denial. According to numerous media reports, he stated that “they have invented a myth that Jews were massacred.”

In July, Hezbollah para-military forces fired rockets and mortars into Israel resulting in the death of eight Israeli soldiers. Another Hezbollah unit crossed the border and seized two Israeli soldiers. Israel responded with massive air strikes killing over a thousand people, mostly Lebanese civilians, and displacing nearly one million Lebanese citizens. At the end of July, Israeli air strikes hit an apartment building in Qana. Human Rights Watch later confirmed that at least 28 died, of which 16 were children, with 13 more still missing.

The conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians continues unabated. The Palestinians interpreted Ariel Sharon’s visit to the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem (accompanied by a thousand police officers) as an act of extreme provocation. It became the event which sparked the second Intifada in which Palestinians took this to the streets in protest. These protests became more and more violent in the ensuing months with a series of suicide bombings.

Both Jews and Arabs can cite a laundry list of injustices suffered at the hands of the other side. Both have become so vividly identified with their own sufferings that they have become blinded to the very real pain suffered by the other. Indeed, it has become a litmus test of allegiance to one’s own side to minimize, ignore, or distort the other side’s pain and to deny the other side’s right to exist as a nation.

Can Christians inside and outside of the Middle East play a role in bringing peace? We who follow the Prince of Peace must first publicly repent of our own complicity in the terrible tragedy that has befallen Jews and Muslims. Before the Christian church will have any credibility in speaking a word of reconciliation, the church must take the massive log out of our own eye. Only then will we see clearly enough to take the splinter out of the eyes of our Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters.

Where shall we begin? Each church must examine its own history and ask forgiveness from Jews and Muslims for the crimes perpetuated against these two great peoples. Regarding the Jews, the Eastern Orthodox Church might declare a day of mourning and repentance for the numerous anti-Semitic statements by the fourth century patriarch John Chrysostom, who among other things, said this about the Jews: The Jews are the most worthless of all men – they are lecherous, greedy, rapacious – they worship the devil, their religion is a sickness…the Jews are the odious assassins of Christ and for killing God there is no expiation possible, no indulgence or pardon. Christians may never cease vengeance and the Jews must live in servitude forever. God always hated the Jews and whoever has intercourse with the Jews will be rejected on Judgment Day. It is incumbent upon all Christians to hate the Jews.

Lutherans could join in that day of mourning and repentance for statements made by Martin Luther in which he said: [We must] set their synagogues on fire, and whatever does not burn up should be covered or spread over with dirt so that no one may ever be able to see a cinder or stone of it…in order that God may see that we are Christians…their homes should likewise be broken down and destroyed…they should be deprived of their prayer books and Talmuds…their rabbis must be forbidden to teach under the threat of death.

And Roman Catholics could certainly join in mourning and repentance for their long history of anti-Semitism. Consider this statement by Thomas Aquinas: It would be perfectly licit to hold the Jews, because of their crucifying the Lord, in perpetual servitude.

Of course, since the Holocaust, Jews have ceased to take the moral credibility of the church seriously. 90% of Germans before the war and in all probability, an even larger proportion of Poles, attended church weekly. Yet it is a tragic fact of history that many of these churchgoers participated in the extermination of European Jewry and very, very few raised a voice of protest or actually engaged in the rescue and protection of Jews.

And it would be fitting regarding this day of Christian repentance and mourning to confess and grieve over the church’s treatment of Muslims for the past thousand years. Where shall we begin in our repentance regarding Muslims?

The Crusades wouldn’t be a bad starting point. When Christian knights from Western Europe recaptured Jerusalem from the Muslims, they massacred the entire population of the city, both Muslims and Jews. Muslims were burned alive in mosques during the retaking of the Holy Land.

I agree that Christians should ask for forgiveness for the sins committed in the name of Jesus Christ throughout history against other peoples and races. If we are sincere then some may come to understand the love of Christ. I also respect Pastor Nathan’s heart in this matter.

More recently, the world stood by silently as tens of thousands of Muslims were slaughtered by Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians in the former Yugoslavia. Following 9/11, Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians showed remarkable insensitivity to Muslim sensibilities, almost going out of their way to offend and provoke Muslims. Thus, Franklin Graham said: “I believe Islam is a very evil and wicked religion.” Benny Hinn said, concerning the Palestinian/Israeli conflict: “We are on God’s side. This is not a war between Arabs and Jews. It is a war between God and the devil. Jerry Falwell called the prophet of Islam, Muhammad, a “terrorist” on CBS’s 60 Minutes. Pat Robertson said that Islam is “a monumental scam,” and claimed the prophet Muhammad was “an absolutely wild-eyed fanatic…a robber and brigand…a killer.” And, of course, Christian Zionists refuse to acknowledge that Palestinians have any legitimate claim to any part of the Holy Land thus eliminating their role as impartial mediators of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.

The issue concerning the nature of other religions is a little more complex. Jesus Christ said that He was the only way to salvation (John 14:6). Thus, if a religion keeps people from obtaining salvation, who benefits from that? Certainly not the adherents of these non-Christian religions. Conversely, getting in people’s faces as some of these quotes do is not helpful in furthering the kingdom of God. Showing them the better way of the love of Christ towards them and helping them understand the love of a personal God through the sacrifice of His Son will bear good fruit.

Following repentance, we Christians must reject a false interpretation of the ancient promises made by God to Abraham. It is simply not the case that the promises made to Abraham implies the biblical right of Jews to control the entirety of the Holy Land in the 21st century. God’s gift of the land to Abraham, according to the Old and New Testaments, was made with a view of God revealing himself eventually to the whole human race. The gift of the land was not an end in itself, but a means of God extending his love to the ends of the earth (for more on this huge issue, see Whose Promised Land? The Continuing Crisis Over Israel and Palestine by Colin Chapman). It is entirely biblical to promote a two-sided partition of the Holy Land, with Jews and Muslims living side-by-side in peace.

Here I disagree with not only the premise of Pastor Nathan’s position but also with the tenor of it. He declares that Christians must reject a false interpretation of the ancient promises…in the 21st century. It comes across to me that he is saying prophecies written 2500 years ago have little validity in our modern age. I have heard unbelievers similarly say the Bible is antiquated and no longer relevant. Biblical prophecy was relevant leading up to the first coming of Jesus and is just as relevant leading up to His second coming. If I misunderstood his tone then why did he use the adjective “ancient” in conjunction with the word “prophecies” and then follow it up with a reference to the “21st century”? As far as the false interpretations, God’s word could not be more clear when it comes to the land of Israel. He declares that He gave the land to the Jews for an everlasting covenant at the beginning of Jewish history with His chosen ones Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their Jewish descendants. He said in the Torah that if the Jews obeyed Him they would remain in the land of Israel. If they disobeyed Him He would remove them from the land. He declares that His eyes are always on the land of Israel and that He has chosen it for His habitation. In the Prophets God states that in the future He will bring the Jews back to the land and they will never be plucked out of it again. The prophet Daniel says that God sets up and brings down rulers and nations. How then did the Jews regain the land of Israel without God’s approval since He is the one who decides when they are removed from the land or when they return to it? I’m not sure why Pastor Nathan is unclear on what the Bible says concerning this issue. The heart of a Christian should never trump the truth of God’s word no matter how good their intentions may be.

We Christians must renounce the unwise view that more weapons and a greater military buildup in the Middle East will somehow bring peace to that region. We Christians must humbly invite Jews and Muslims to acknowledge the suffering and the pain each has caused the other. We must further encourage the view that the land belongs to God and not to the Jews or to the Muslims.

I agree that weapons will not bring peace to the Middle East. Pastor Nathan rightly states that the land of Israel belongs to God. And God declares in His word that He gave it to the Jews for an everlasting covenant.

One of the most helpful perspectives on this conflict was offered by Naim Ateek, a Palestinian Christian priest. Father Ateek said this:

The Palestinians need to become conscious of and sensitive to the horror of the Holocaust, Nazi Germany’s attempt to exterminate the Jews. Granted the Holocaust was not a Middle Eastern phenomenon, and the Palestinians had nothing to do with it; nevertheless, we need to understand the extent of the trauma for the Jews…we as Palestinians have refused to accept, much less to internalize, the horrible tragedy of the Holocaust. We have resisted even acknowledging it, believing that we have been subjected to our own Holocaust at the hands of the Jews. As we adopt a new attitude vis-a-vis the Holocaust…we may candidly acknowledge that the only justification that the Palestinians will accept for the creation of a Jewish State in Palestine is the Holocaust. It was the Holocaust and only the Holocaust that necessitated a home for the Jews. The Palestinians have to come to accept giving the Jews the best part of Palestine (Western Palestine), not because they had any right to it, not because of the Balfour Declaration, and not even because of anti-Semitism, but because of the Holocaust.

However, Palestinian Christians should be open to the fact that God’s word declares the land belongs to the Jews. To not do so is to deny the truth of the Scriptures that proclaim their Savior.

Father Ateek went on to address the Jews saying:

Jews in Israel must approach the Palestinians saying: “We are sorry that we came to you with arrogance and a feeling of superiority. We came with good and not so good reasons. But we are now here in the land. Forgive us for the wrong and the injustice that we have caused you. We took part of your country. We ignored you. We pretended that you did not exist, or even worse, that you did not matter. We stereotyped you, convincing others that you are all terrorists. We have refused to recognize that you have any rights, while we have insisted that you should recognize and legitimate our right to your land. We have insisted and convinced the United States and others to insist that you recognize our claim to your land. We have wronged you. Your own country of Palestine used to be our country 2000 years ago. We still have many cherished historic memories that keep pulling us to it. It is ‘our Holy Land’ too, our ‘Promised Land’ also. But there is room for both of us here, both Jews and Arabs.”

God commanded the Jews to take the land of Canaan from the people who had lived there for hundreds of years. Was God wrong for doing this? If you are a Christian you would have to answer no He was not wrong. As stated above God decides when the Jews live in the land. Is it possible that it is God’s will for the land to return to the Jews? If it is then is He wrong for doing it again at the expense of others? Having said that though Jews should not be mistreating Arabs and Arabs should not be mistreating Jews.

Is there any hope for peace in the Middle East? I believe there is. But the conditions for peace have plainly been laid out by the Prince of Peace, Jesus the Messiah. There can be no peace until individuals, religions and nations are willing to acknowledge not only their own pain and their own injustices suffered, but the pain and injustice suffered by their enemies, as well as the pain and suffering perpetuated at our own hands. A willingness to acknowledge the pain of the other is the first step towards creating a just and lasting peace.

I too believe there will be peace in the Middle East. But it won’t happen until Jesus comes again to set up His kingdom on earth and reign from Jerusalem. Hamas and Hezbollah leaders have stated they will never recognize the state of Israel. Thus the Jews will keep fighting for their survival. The Bible says that by mercy and truth” iniquity is purged. Christians’ hearts should be merciful towards others but also truthful even if we may not like the outcome of such truths. Pastor Nathan has a heart for God as is evidenced by his and his church’s outreach to the lost. On the subject of who the land belongs to however, I believe he is misguided. I discuss the subject of the land of Israel in several articles on my website. You can read them here:

Elections reveal fundamental problem for the Israelis concerning the Muslim extremists

Arab Countires and Israel

(February 11, 2009)  Yesterday, Israelis citizens voted for a new government. (Consensus forming on Likud-led unity gov’t with Kadima) The result was a close election between the conservative parties and their leader Binyamin Netanyahu and the centrist party Kadima and its leader Tzipi Livni. The Knesset elections resulted in a 65-55 edge for conservative members. This probably means that Netanyahu will emerge as the next prime minister of Israel. However, as the article points out, the end result might be a unity type of government with both parties being well represented. Though there are many factors that may have influenced the decision of individual Israelis to vote for one party ideology or the other, the overriding concern has to be peace and security. In the past the conservative Likud party has mainly opposed unilateral evacuations of the occupied territories which of course led to the status quo of conflict with the Muslim extremists. In 2005, former Likud leader Ariel Sharon departed from his party and formed a new centrist party called Kadima. Kadima supported the evacuation of Jewish citizens from the Gaza Strip and returning the governing of this area to the Arabs. In 2006, the Gaza Arabs elected a plurality of Hamas members to the Palestinian parliament. This led to the isolation of Hamas-led Gaza by Israel and International governments. In 2007, after a civil war between Hamas and Fatah, Hamas became the sole ruling power in the Gaza Strip. Since then Hamas has fired thousands of Qassam rockets into Israel. This escalated into a full scale invasion by Israel in late 2008 which killed many Palestinians. This scenario came about because of the unilateral withdrawal by Israel from Gaza. Thus, the concept of “land for peace” appears to be a failure. However, occupation which seems to be favored by the more conservative groups also proved to be a failure. Neither position has led to peace between Israel and the Arabs. This election showed that the Israeli electorate is unsure of which direction Israel should go in the future thus representatives from both sides of the issue were elected. The one clear result from this election seems to be that Israelis decided that the liberal wing of Israeli politics do not have the answers to deal with this decades-old conflict as is evidenced by their poor showing in this election. The truth is that no matter who runs the Israeli government the Muslim extremists will never accept the right of Israel to exist. They may make temporary truces and agreements with Israel but only with the goal of eventually returning Israel to Dar al-Islam (i.e. an Islamic-run government). See my article (Why There will never be peace in Israel until the Messiah returns)

Peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians in 2008?

Jerusalem

Jerusalem

(June 23, 2008)  Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared that a temporary peace document will be signed by the Israelis and the Palestinians before 2008 is over. (‘Olmert says peace document likely this year’) Whether or not this becomes a reality the Bible indicates that some sort of covenant or agreement involving Israel is going to be reached at the beginning of the End-Times. The prophet Daniel spoke of a future leader whom Christians call the Antichrist. In chapter 9 of Daniel it states that a ruler or prince will confirm a covenant with many for one week of years or seven years which is called the Tribulation Period. Many believe this covenant will be a peace treaty of some kind. Daniel speaks of this ruler or Antichrist and what he will do during this period:

“24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” (Daniel 9:24-27)

That this covenant seems to be a peace treaty [which may include the rebuilding of the Third Temple (i.e. the holy place) since the Antichrist enters it and causes sacrifices to cease] is indicated in another passage in Daniel and in the writings of Paul:

“23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. 24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. 25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.” (Daniel 8:23-25)

It states here that this ruler will destroy many through his policy of peace. The apostle Paul in writing about the End-Times also mentions a false sense of peace in the world just prior to the apocalypse:

“1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:1-9)

Paul declares that the world will finally think it has achieved peace (probably through the charismatic efforts of the Antichrist). That is when sudden destruction comes in the form of God’s judgment upon a rebellious earth. Thus, anytime a peace agreement is discussed concerning Israel it is worth keeping an eye on developments that surround it. Notice in the last verse Paul wrote above he declared that the only way to avoid the judgment of God is to obtain salvation through Jesus Christ. Truce with Hamas must include Jerusalem as capital of Palestine

Old and New Jerusalem

(April 21, 2008)  Former President Jimmy Carter traveled to the Middle East in order to try to jump start peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas. According to a Jerusalem Post article, any truce (notice that Hamas isn’t speaking of a peace treaty) with Israel must include Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Palestine. (US: Hamas truce offer meaningless) The article elaborates on Hamas’ conditions for a truce, “Khaled Mashaal, whose group has sworn to destroy Israel, told reporters in Damascus on Monday that Hamas would accept a Palestinian state in the West Bank with Israel as its neighbor, but stressed that his group would not formally recognize it, a move immediately dismissed by the US as meaningless. ‘We agree to a (Palestinian) state on pre-67 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital with genuine sovereignty without settlements, but without recognizing
Israel,’ Mashaal said.’We have offered a truce if Israel withdraws to the 1967 borders, a truce of 10 years as a proof of recognition.’”

Once again it is clear there will be no peace between Israel and Hamas, Hizbullah, or any other Islamic terrorist organization because of unreasonable demands. It is going to take the future world leader whom Christians call the Antichrist to seemingly solve the Israeli-Arab conflict.

“Seventy weeks are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of
sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know
therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment
to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the
wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to
cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the
desolate.”
(Daniel 9:24-27)

In the last verse of this passage in chapter 9 of Daniel, it states that
this ruler or prince will confirm a covenant with many for one
week of seven years. Many believe this covenant will be a peace
treaty of some kind. Daniel speaks of this ruler or Antichrist
and what he will do during this period:

“And in the latter time of their kingdom, when
the transgressors are come to the full,
a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark
sentences, shall stand up. And his power shall be
mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy
wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practice, and shall
destroy the mighty and the holy people. And through his policy
also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify
himself in his heart, and by peace shall
destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of
princes; but he shall be broken without
hand.”
(Daniel 8:23-25)

It declares here that this ruler will destroy many through his policy
of peace. The apostle Paul
agrees with Daniel where he says that the Antichrist will magnify
himself and stand up against the Prince of
princes:

“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day
shall not come, except there come a
falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of
perdition; Who opposes and exalts himself above all that
is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits
in the Temple of God, showing himself that he is
God.”
(II Thessalonians 2:3-4)

On the Mount of Olives Jesus too made mention of the Antichrist
entering the Temple when He said:

“When you therefore shall see the abomination
of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the
prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso reads, let him
understand:) Then let them which be in Judea flee into
the mountains.”
(Matthew 24:15-16)

It appears this future leader will either author or at least support
a peace treaty that lasts seven years. Part of this agreement
will probably include the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple since
the last verse of Daniel chapter 9 states that in the middle of
this seven-year period the Antichrist will cause the Temple
sacrifices to cease. This cessation of sacrificial offerings will
come about when the Antichrist enters the Temple to declare
himself God. Daniel writes that this will lead to the desolation
or desecration of the Temple. Paul seems to be speaking about the
results of this peace treaty in his first letter to the
Thessalonians:

“For yourselves know perfectly
that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For
when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden
destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with
child; and they shall not
escape.”
(I Thessalonians 5:2-3)

No matter how good the intentions of those who would bring peace to the Middle East, they will be unsuccessful until this future world leader initiates his reign. Even then though, true peace will not come until Jesus Christ comes again to set up His kingdom on earth.
