President Obama’s bipartisan Debt Commission: America will go broke under status quo

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

(July 14, 2010) Earlier this year President Obama created a bipartisan Debt Commission to analyze America’s fiscal status and future financial outlook. The co-chairmen of this commission are former Republican senator Alan Simpson from Wyoming and President Clinton’s former chief of staff Erskine Bowles. These two men spoke at the National Governors Association this past Sunday.

A Washington Post article (Obama’s debt commission warns of fiscal ‘cancer’) states,

“Bowles said that unlike the current economic crisis, which was largely unforeseen before it hit in fall 2008, the coming fiscal calamity is staring the country in the face. ‘This one is as clear as a bell,’ he said. ‘This debt is like a cancer.’

The commission leaders said that, at present, federal revenue is fully consumed by three programs: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. ‘The rest of the federal government, including fighting two wars, homeland security, education, art, culture, you name it, veterans — the whole rest of the discretionary budget is being financed by China and other countries,’ Simpson said.

‘We can’t grow our way out of this,’ Bowles said. ‘We could have decades of double-digit growth and not grow our way out of this enormous debt problem. We can’t tax our way out. . . . The reality is we’ve got to do exactly what you all do every day as governors. We’ve got to cut spending or increase revenues or do some combination of that.’”

In February of this year Richard Fisher, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, spoke before the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth (Roadblocks to Recovery). In that speech he said,

“Pundits and analysts like to focus on the year in which Social Security will go permanently into the red on an annual cash flow basis—which recently was projected to occur in 2019 but could occur as early as 2016. But they largely ignore the severity of the broader problem: accumulated entitlement debt over the infinite horizon. According to our calculations at the Dallas Fed, that unfunded debt of Social Security and Medicare combined has now reached $104 trillion—trillion with a ‘T’—in discounted present value. And while much attention in recent years has been devoted to Social Security, the lion’s share of the total entitlement shortfall (nearly $90 trillion) actually comes from Medicare. This is a prodigious number. Others—like Pete Peterson’s foundation, which uses a different time horizon in its methodology—calculate the unfunded liability at north of $40 trillion, growing by a sum of $2 trillion to $3 trillion per year. No matter. The problem is frightful, whether you take his numbers or ours.”

The picture these governmental and financial experts paint for America’s future seems to be one of apocalyptic economic devastation. What is the prophetic significance of such an outcome? In September of 2007 I wrote an article titled “The Decline and Fall of America“. In that article (before the 2008 meltdown of America’s economy) I wrote,

“If you read the article “The Coming Invasion of Israel” on this web site, you know that Bible prophecy reveals that a conglomeration of countries will invade Israel in the future. In the last sixty years no non-Arabic nation has dared attack it. There is one very simple reason for this. Any country outside the Middle East knows that America would defend Israel militarily if they initiated a war with them. During the 1967 Six Day War, Russia saw that Israel was decimating its Arab allies. They considered intervening in the conflict but knew that America would have to respond. Thus, a major conflict between the superpowers was averted. Such is the case to this day. However, because of the prophecy God gave to Ezekiel, I believe that America has to lose its superpower status. With a weakened America the invasion of Israel can take place.

Is this another Christian fanatic declaring the sky is falling? Not if you listen to what the U.S. Comptroller General (who heads the United States Government Accounting Office) stated recently in an interview. He is very pessimistic about America’s future as these excerpts from the Financial Times article will reveal:

David Walker, comptroller general of the US, issued the unusually downbeat assessment of his country’s future in a report that lays out what he called “chilling long-term simulations”. Drawing parallels with the end of the Roman empire, Mr Walker warned there were “striking similarities” between America’s current situation and the factors that brought down Rome, including “declining moral values and political civility at home, an over-confident and over-extended military in foreign lands and fiscal irresponsibility by the central government”.

Inspector General Walker lays out a pretty dismal scenario for America’s future. I agree with him. In the 1960s, Ruth Graham, wife of Billy Graham, read a chapter out of her husband’s new book. After handing the book back to him she said, “Billy, if God doesn’t come soon and bring judgment upon the United States, He’s going to have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah!” We as a nation continue to live our lives as if God doesn’t exist. Our political leaders’ only goal is to maintain their power at whatever the cost to America’s security. The Judicial system releases child predators, rapists, murderers on a frequent basis. A segment of America wants to ignore the laws of America by allowing anyone to violate the Immigration Laws of the United States. There is a mindset in our culture that declares the criminal is the victim, a victim of bad upbringing or bad circumstances. Pornography, homosexuality, adultery are prevalent throughout our entertainment and in our lifestyles. The legalization of abortion has resulted in the deaths of nearly 50 million unborn babies. The difference now is that society accepts these behaviors as alternative lifestyles. Liberal Churches deny the miracles of the Bible. They deny the Bible’s authority to guide human beings. The lists of America’s ills goes on and on. The rest of the world is no better. Although God’s judgment is coming upon the world, I believe He will start with America…

The downfall of America may come as a result of a financial collapse. It could come from a military defeat. The War on Terror is not going to go away. Just ask the Israelis after six decades of fighting it. The moral climate which declares there is no right or wrong will also play a part. Whatever it takes for the rest of the world to see that America is weak will happen. Once this occurs, the other powers in the world will have a free hand to wreak havoc wherever they please. This will lead to the invasion of Israel and the End-Times.” [end of my 2007 article]

Another factor in the downfall of America could be political in nature. Even if we are economically or militarily capable of continuing our protection of Israel we may be politically unwilling to support it. President Obama’s administration, unlike all the previous administrations since 1947, seems to be turning away from Israel in favor of the Arab nations of the Middle East (see my blog article from March 18th of this year The Decline and Fall of America Redux and Ezekiel 38-39.

I personally do not want to see America decline in any fashion. However, if it is God’s will for this to happen then I want to keep my eyes on Him and be in His will for my life.

“Bible translators hope to have every language covered in 15 years”: “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come” – Matthew 24:14

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

(June 25, 2010)  The Denver Post ran a story about Bible translation: “Bible translators hope to have every language covered in 15 years”. The article reports:

“A Christian endeavor of almost 2,000 years could be substantially completed by 2025. Protestant translators expect to have the Bible — or at least some of it — written in every one of the world’s 6,909 spoken languages. ‘We’re in the greatest period of acceleration in 20 centuries of Bible translation,’ said Morrison resident Paul Edwards, who heads up Wycliffe Bible Translators’ $1 billion Last Languages Campaign. Portable computers and satellites get the credit for speeding things up by about 125 years.”

Many dedicated men and women have served Jesus Christ over the last two thousand years. Bible translators have performed some of the most important roles in furthering the Kingdom of God since the incarnation of Jesus. In the performance of their calling as translators they have possibly played a role in helping to fulfill a prophecy that Jesus spoke to His disciples on the Mt. of Olives during His Passion week:

“And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come” (Matthew 24:14)

This is the only saying of Jesus that indicates the timing of the End-Times (in other sayings Jesus did describe what the End-Times would be like but not the timing except to say that no one knows the day or hour of His return). Notice that Jesus said the “gospel of the kingdom” will be preached in all the world and then the end will come. He did not say the Bible or Word of God would be in all the world but that the gospel would be preached to every nation before His second coming.

Many sources say there are as many as 195 countries in the world today (worldatlas.com). However, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) World Factbook lists 237 countries. Of these, thirteen countries have no registered percentage of Christians among their population.

Afghanistan
Bangladesh
Bhutan
Cambodia
Cocos (Keeling) Islands
Libya
Maldives
Mauritania
Nepal
Oman
Saudi Arabia
Somalia
Western Sahara                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                (source: The CIA World Factbook)

I find it unlikely that there are no indigenous Christians in these thirteen countries. Even if there are no Christians in them it is likely the gospel has reached all the nations of the world through the Internet or by other means of media access. If so, does this mean we are close to seeing the fulfillment of this prophecy of Jesus? It is possible Jesus meant that when His followers did indeed preach the Gospel in every nation then He would return. However, I believe the Bible indicates this prophecy will be fulfilled in a supernatural way.

In the Book of Revelation God’s servant John witnessed a global event:

“6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, 7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” (Revelation 14:6-7)

Jesus said the Gospel would be preached “unto all nations” and the angel in Revelation preaches the Gospel to “every nation”. Thus, I believe this is the event which will fulfill this prophecy of Jesus. After that, the final seven bowl judgments occur culminating in the battle of Armageddon and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

From a prophetic perspective, I believe the most important sign Christians should have looked for was the rebirth of the nation of Israel. Several prophecies in both the Old Testament and New Testament involve the return of the Jews to the land of Israel and the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Israel became a nation in 1948 and gained control of Jerusalem in 1967. Therefore, all other End-Times prophecies should be interpreted in light of this prophetic event. But until the Lord’s return, Christians are to continue spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ and continue ministering to those with spiritual and physical needs.

As it was in the days of Noah and Lot…

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

(June 20, 2010) “22 And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 “They will say to you, ‘Look there! Look here!’ Do not go away, and do not run after them. 24 “For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 25 “But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 “And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 “It was the same as happened in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; 29 but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 “It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.” (Luke 17:22-30)

Jesus declared that the days leading up to His coming will be like it was in the days of Noah and Lot. It seems He was telling the disciples they would not see His coming but that when it does happen it will come unexpectedly. The apostle Paul echoes this statement in his letter to the Christians at Thessaloniki, “2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” (I Thessalonians 5:2-3)

However, this does not seem to harmonize with what Jesus said in Matthew chapter 24:

“33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. 34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away. 36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but My Father only. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” (Matthew 24:33-39)

“All these things” in verse 33 of this passage refers to the previous verses of chapter 24 where Jesus had just finished giving His disciples signs to look for leading up to His return. If Jesus told His followers there would be signs leading up to His second coming how then would it be unexpected? I believe the answer to this apparent discrepancy lies in the distinction the Bible makes between believers and unbelievers. In the same passage in Thessalonians mentioned above Paul delineates this difference:

“1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. 11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” (I Thessalonians 5:1-11)

It comes down to a matter of belief versus unbelief. Paul wrote, “3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” (Romans 4:3) The disciple John also contrasts those who believe in Jesus with those who don’t, “1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth Him that begat loveth Him also that is begotten of Him…5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?…10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made Him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of His Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (I John 5:1,5,10-13) Those who believe are “children of the light” and will look for the signs that Jesus’ return is approaching. Those who don’t believe will reject the truth of God’s prophetic word and scoff at it, “3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of His coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” (II Peter 3:3-7) Peter says that some unbelievers are willingly ignorant of the truth of God’s word. It seems that other unbelievers will be blinded to the prophetic signs of the end:

“1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto Him, 2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the Spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming: 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” (II Thessalonians 2:1-12)

Therefore, the coming of Jesus and the judgments of God will come unexpectedly to the world as it did in Noah and Lot’s day because the world will be blinded since they rejected the truth of God’s word. The apostle Peter alluded to this when he wrote, “5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an exsample unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished.” ( II Peter 2:5-9) It seems that Noah preached the coming judgment of God but the world didn’t believe him.

Jesus’ mention of Noah and Lot in conjunction with the End-Times begs the question “Why did God judge the world in Noah’s case and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in Lot’s case?” The Bible answers both of these questions. The flood judgment came because:

“5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart. 7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth Me that I have made them.” (Genesis 6:5-7)

The judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah occurred because:

“20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; 21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto Me; and if not, I will know…1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; 2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. 3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.” (Genesis 18:20-21,19:1-5)

“49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before Me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.” (Ezekiel 16:49-50)

“7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” (Jude vs.7)

In the case of the flood, God judged the world because it was filled with wickedness and was obsessed with committing evil continually. God judged Sodom and Gomorrah because of pride, gluttony, laziness, oppression of the poor, and the abominable sin of homosexuality.

The prophet Jeremiah declared, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) Humans have always sinned against the Lord throughout history. Why didn’t God judge every generation of humanity that has ever existed? The Bible makes it clear that God is longsuffering and merciful to His creation. However, when He determines that a situation’s cup of sin is full then He brings down His wrath. Before the flood wickedness in the earth was “great”. Sodom’s sin was “very grievous” to God. He told Abraham that his descendants would not inhabit the land of Canaan/Israel right away because “the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full” (Genesis 15:16). Therefore His final judgment of the world will not occur until the world’s cup of wickedness is full. The question is how close are we to reaching the breaking point?

The world’s pride, like Sodom’s, is evident by its rejection of the truth of God’s word. Unrepentant sexual sin in general and homosexual sin in particular is rampant around the earth. Globalization is leading humanity away from reliance on God and more reliance on the world to govern itself. Killing of the unborn and oppression of the poor is widespread. And the world is beginning to curse the nation of Israel. In a prophetic reference concerning Israel (i.e. Abraham’s descendants) God made a promise, “3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee.” (Genesis 12:3) As I stated above, it would seem that God could have judged the world at any point in its history but its cup of wickedness never crossed God’s judgment threshold. However, it may be that we are either approaching or living in the “Days of Noah and Lot.” Only our Father in heaven knows.

Jesus gave another indication as to the timing of God, “14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” (Matthew 24:14) With modern technology and globalization the preaching of the Gospel has been widespread throughout the earth. How many more people need to hear the Gospel before this prophecy is fulfilled? Only our Father in heaven knows.

Joyful Firstfruits, Resurrection, and Easter Sunday: “Occupy till I come”

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Link to Free Wheelchair Mission web site(Firstfruits, Resurrection, Easter Sunday – April 4, 2010) Nearly two thousand years ago God sent His Son Jesus Christ to the world to save mankind from its sins. In doing so God fulfilled many of the prophecies He had given to His people, the Jewish nation of Israel. Not only did Jesus fulfill more than a hundred prophecies concerning the suffering Messiah but He also embodied the Law of God which included the command to observe seven Feast or Holy Days. Jesus fulfilled the first four spring/summer Feasts with His first coming. He will fulfill the rest of the Old Testament prophecies concerning the victorious Messiah and the last three autumn feasts with His second coming.

During Jesus’ ministry on earth He showed His followers how they should live their lives until He comes again. He told a parable that illustrates this principle:

“10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. 11 And as they heard these things, He added and spake a parable, because He was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. 12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. 13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. 14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. 15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.” (Luke 19:10-15)

In this parable Jesus is the nobleman, the citizens are the world, the servants are His followers (Christians), and the money represents the gifts and talents that He gave to those who believe in Him. Jesus was stating that He was going to go away but return one day. He was telling His followers that while He was away they were to Occupy or be about God’s business until He returned. I wrote an article about this issue called “Occupy till I come”. In that article I wrote, “For the last two-thousand years Christians have been occupied with spreading the gospel and helping those in need. Until Jesus does return, we still need to be occupied with the work of the Lord. As times get tougher we need to reach out to those who are hurting both spiritually and financially. At no time during Jesus’ ministry did He ever tell His followers to rely on the governments to meet their needs. When His disciples berated a woman for anointing Him with expensive oil He told them to leave her alone because “Ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.” (Mark 14:7) Christians are to help and feed and clothe and shelter the poor. Jesus said His followers were to pray for and heal the sick. And He commanded us to lead people to eternal salvation through His sacrificial death and resurrection.”

Currently there are thousands of charitable Christian ministries attempting to meet the needs of a hurting world. Every Easter Sunday for the last twenty years or so our church has taken an offering and given the entire amount to a Christ-centered ministry to help those whose Easter may not be so joyful. Sometimes its a local inner city ministry or Christian mission that helps those who have dire spiritual and physical needs. We also offer free medical clinics to those who cannot afford to get the help they need. There are many other churches around the nation and world who are “occupying” in like manner. This year our church has chosen the Free Wheelchair Mission that provides wheelchairs to developing countries. They believe there are 100 million persons in the world who have to crawl along the ground if they are able to or have to spend 365 days a year inside a hut or hovel or shack without the means to get out. As with all human suffering the stories are tragic. Below is a video from this ministry:

YouTube Preview Image

These wheelchairs were designed by an MIT graduate to be inexpensive and easily repairable in developing countries. They use mountain-bike tires to which most nations have access and plastic deck chairs that should last seven to ten years. They cost $59.20 per chair. So far this ministry has bestowed 500,000 of these wheelchairs on people around the world. A visiting minister to our church shared some stories about the impact this ministry has had on those who are in need of wheelchairs. A family used to take their daughter who couldn’t walk and set her on a garbage dump in order to scavenge for food or anything of value. Free Wheelchair Mission provided her with a chair. When they visited her a couple of years later she got up out of her wheelchair and started to walk. She had strengthened her legs by getting into and out of the chair and was able to walk by grabbing onto the back of the chair. Another story concerned a person who was unable to get out of their hovel for most of the year. With the wheelchair their family no longer had to carry them to move them about. To see a human being crawling along the ground to survive is heart-wrenching. I believe that one way Christians can occupy while waiting for the Lord Jesus to return is to give “legs” to people so they are able to get out and see other people and experience the beautiful side of God’s creation. When they asked the recipients of these wheelchairs what was the best part of being mobile most responded that it was great to feel the sunshine on their face. We live in a sinful and fallen world and Jesus said the poor we will have with us always and that we could help them whenever we wanted. I would encourage you to give the gift of the great outdoors and God’s creation to someone who is unable to experience it because they are physically impaired. May God bless you in this endeavor and may you hear that most coveted saying from the Lord Jesus Christ, “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” (Matthew ch. 25)

Palm Sunday – Fulfillment of the most precise prophecy in the Bible

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

(Palm Sunday – March 28, 2010) Today is Palm Sunday, the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem and finally allowed the people to proclaim Him the Messiah. In my book Even at the Doors: Jesus, Israel, and the End-Times I wrote a chapter concerning the most accurate prophecy in the Bible and its fulfillment on the first Palm Sunday. Below is the contents of that chapter:

5 – 70 Weeks = 490 Years?

The prophetic Book of Daniel contains some of the most precise prophecies written in the Old Testament. Because this book contains such specific predictions, a controversy has swirled around it since the first centuries of Christianity.

The critics maintain that this book had to be written long after the prophet Daniel lived (ca. Sixth Century B.C.), most likely during the Maccabean period (ca. Second Century B.C.).  Their reasoning for this conclusion lies in the fact that the events that Daniel foretold did come true in the interim time between his death and the arrival of the Jesus Christ. Liberal scholars and theologians late date his book because they cannot accept the fact that God would give such accurate prophecies to human beings. This attitude of course denies that God is omniscient. God, through the prophet Isaiah, differed with their conclusion saying: “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.”1

In recent years, the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has caused the dating issue of the Book of Daniel to be revisited. Among the many scrolls found was Daniel’s book. Since it is determined that the Dead Sea Scrolls were written between the Third Century B.C. and the First Century A.D. this has led some scholars to assign an earlier date to the Book of Daniel.2

However, from my perspective, one overriding factor supports the accuracy and authorship of the Book of Daniel. Jesus Christ spoke of Daniel when He described to His disciples the signs of His second coming on the Mount of Olives. He said, “When you therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place…”.3 With this statement, Jesus declared that the Book of Daniel was authentic prophetic writing.

Nevertheless, even those who refuse to accept this premise and continue to maintain that this book was written around 165 B.C. cannot sidestep the accuracy of the prophecy I will be discussing in this chapter. A prophecy that was written well before the birth of Jesus yet had its fulfillment in His lifetime.

The importance of the prophecy that I am going to be covering here cannot be overstated. It was one of the leading factors that caused the late Orthodox Jewish Talmudic scholar, Rachmiel Frydland, to accept Jesus as the Messiah.4 Rabbi Leopold Cohn had read this prophecy and also came to the realization that only Jesus Christ could fulfill it. He became a believer in Jesus as the Messiah and started the organization called the “American Board of Missions to the Jews”.5 That other Jews like them have also come to the same conclusion based primarily on this prophetic scripture passage illustrates an important truth. The Jews in Jesus’ day had the same opportunity as modern Jews to accept that Jesus was the fulfillment of this prophecy. As will be shown, this is exactly what Jesus told the religious leaders of His day.

__________

In the year 1895, Sir Robert Anderson wrote a book called “The Coming Prince” in which he wrote about the prophecies in the Book of Daniel. He is generally credited with bringing the interpretation of the prophecy found in chapter 9 of Daniel to the modern era. There have been many other biblical scholars since who have agreed with his interpretation.

__________

King Nebuchadnezzar had taken the prophet Daniel as a captive along with the rest of the Jews back to the land of Babylon. While he was there he continued to serve God faithfully even at the risk to his own life.

Daniel not only had a heart toward God but he also was concerned about his people and desperately wanted to know what God’s plan was for their future. He had been reading the Old Testament Book of Jeremiah when he came across a passage that caught his attention: “In the first year of his reign [i.e., King Darius - 538/537 B.C.] I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.”6 The scripture passage Daniel had read is found in the Book of Jeremiah: “Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Because you have not heard My words, Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations…And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years…For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.”7

The reason God gives for this punishment is because the Jews had transgressed against His laws. One of the many laws that they had broken helped determine the length of time of their punishment, in this case 70 years.

When God gave His laws to the Jews He told them that they could plant and harvest the land of Israel for six consecutive years. However, on the seventh year they had to give the land a rest and thus they could not plant anything in the ground. God said that He would provide a bountiful harvest in the sixth year that would carry them through the seventh or Sabbath year.8

But the Jews did not obey this law of God’s as He makes clear: “And those that had escaped from the sword carried he [i.e., Nebuchadnezzar] away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: To fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept Sabbath, to fulfill threescore and ten years.”9

Therefore, God based the length of the punishment for the Jews upon how many Sabbath years they had ignored. The resulting punishment of seventy “Sabbath” years means that for 490 years the Jews did not give the land a rest. To make up for each of those seventh or Sabbath years they had not observed God added one year of captivity to their sentence.

With this understanding, Daniel then spoke one of the most heartfelt prayers of repentance and supplication in the entire Bible.10  While he was praying the angel Gabriel appeared to him and gave to him a prophetic message that would declare the future of the Jewish people:

“Seventy weeks are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” (Daniel 9:24-27)

The word “weeks” in this passage is translated from the Hebrew word “shabuwa” which literally means “sevens”. Therefore, this prophecy gives a time frame for the Jewish nation that would span “seventy sevens”. The question is, What time period does these “sevens” encompass? Since the context of this prophecy was the seventy Sabbath years of punishment given to the Jews these “sevens” are actually years.11 Thus, “seventy sevens of years” or 490 years are determined for the time frame of this prophecy.

This scripture passage concerns only the Jewish people since the people of Daniel were Jews. The holy city can only refer to Jerusalem since this is the only city in the world that is holy to Jews. At the end of this 490-year period God would put an end to the transgressions and sins of the Jewish people. Then He would bring in everlasting righteousness and anoint the most holy [i.e., the Jewish Temple].

According to this prophecy, the 490-year period would commence with the issuing of a commandment or decree to rebuild Jerusalem and restore its streets and walls that the Babylonian invasion had destroyed. There are two major decrees given in the Old Testament that concern the restoration of Jerusalem. The first is found in the Book of Ezra where King Cyrus of Persia proclaimed that the house [i.e., Temple] of God was to be rebuilt in Jerusalem.12  This decree was issued in the year 539 B.C. However, it cannot be the commandment referred to in this prophecy of Daniel’s because it does not speak to the rebuilding of the streets and walls of Jerusalem.

The second decree is found in the Book of Nehemiah. King Artaxerxes issued it in the Jewish month of Nisan in the twentieth year of his reign13 (many biblical passages give the specific numerical day when it lists a Jewish month. In this case, no specific day is mentioned so by default the first day of Nisan is probably what is meant here). This decree specifically mentions that Nehemiah was to receive “timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.”14 Unlike the Ezra decree, this one fulfills precisely the prophecy of Daniel to “restore and to build Jerusalem…the street shall be built again, and the wall”. This decree then starts the “seventy weeks” prophecy on March 5, 444 B.C.15

Thus, from the date that the decree was issued, Daniel states that it will be 69 “sevens of years” or 483 years until the time the Messiah comes to His Jewish people.

The Bible gives the length of a year as consisting of 360 days.16  This biblical year was based upon the lunar phases which comprised 30-day time periods. In modern times, our calendar is based upon the solar year which lasts 365 days with an extra “leap” day being added every fourth year. This of course keeps the days of each year occurring at the same time during the seasons. The Jews adjusted their lunar-year calendar by adding an extra month every few years by which to keep their seasons consistent.

To calculate the “69 weeks” until the Messiah came, you multiply the 483 years by 360 days. The result is that the Messiah would appear 173,880 days from March 5, 444 B.C. By converting these days, using the precise length of our solar year, the day the Messiah would appear is the 10th of Nisan or March 30, 33 A.D. That the Messiah would appear on the 10th of Nisan has a tremendous significance that I will disclose shortly. This means that according to Daniel’s prophecy, any person not proclaimed the Messiah on March 30, 33 A.D. could not in fact be the Messiah.

The final part of this prophecy addressed in this section concerns the prophetic phrase that states the “Messiah [shall] be cut off, but not for Himself”. This of course pertains to the earlier prophecy of Isaiah in which he said: “for He [i.e., the Messiah] was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of My people was He stricken”.17 Therefore, after the Messiah appeared He would be killed according to this prophecy of Daniel’s and the prophecy of Isaiah.

The New Testament illustrates how perfectly Jesus Christ fulfilled this prophecy.

Fulfillment by Jesus Christ:

The biblical writer Luke gives timing of the beginning of Jesus’ ministry on earth in his Gospel:

“and Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene…Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased. And Jesus Himself began to be about thirty years of age…”18

Biblical scholars recognize the Gospel writer Luke as a historian of the first degree. His book illustrates thoroughly the attention he gives to historical detail. In this passage, he makes it clear that Jesus was baptized and began His ministry in the 15th year of the reign of the Roman emperor Tiberius Caesar. Since historians state that the Roman emperor Augustus died on August 19, 14 A.D., this means that Tiberius became sole emperor that same year. Thus, Jesus began His ministry in 29 A.D., which was the 15th year of Tiberius’ reign.

Most biblical scholars have concluded that Jesus’ earthly ministry lasted three and one-half years. They base this belief on the listing of the various Jewish feasts in the Gospels that occurred during His ministry. Since His ministry started in the latter half of 29 A.D., He would have finished it in the spring of 33 A.D.

The final feast mentioned in the Gospels is the feast of Passover, which begins on the 14th of the Jewish month Nisan. According to our modern Gregorian calendar, this converts to Friday, April 3, 33 A.D.  It was during this final feast that the Romans crucified Jesus.

At the risk of offending centuries of Christian tradition, I will point out that the 10th of Nisan, 33 A.D. actually occurred on a Monday. This would have been the exact date of Jesus’ “triumphal entry” into Jerusalem when the multitudes of Jewish people proclaimed Him the Messiah. The tradition that refers to this day as “Palm Sunday” has its basis in a certain reading of a passage in the Gospel of John:

“Then Jesus six days before the Passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom He raised from the dead…On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet Him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord. And Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat thereon; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion: behold, your King cometh, sitting on a donkey’s colt.”19

The dilemma here is based on how you count the days before the Passover feast mentioned by John. If the Passover was on Friday, then counting backwards five days from that day takes you to Monday, which actually started Sunday evening according to the way the Jews count their days (Genesis 1:5 – “And the evening and the morning were the first day”).

So according to this prophecy of Daniel, the Messiah would appear on the 10th of Nisan, 33 A.D. or using our calendar, March 30, 33 A.D.  Jesus fulfilled it to the exact day. The fact that Jesus was sitting on a donkey, just as the prophet Zechariah had foretold about the Messiah with the people proclaiming Him “King” or “Messiah”, confirms that He alone fulfilled this prophecy. JESUS CHRIST IS THE MESSIAH.

It is significant that several times during Jesus’ ministry the people wanted to publicly proclaim Him the Messiah. Each of these times Jesus refused to allow them to perform this coronation.20 However, on the 10th of Nisan, 33 A.D. Jesus not only welcomed the praises and proclamations of the people declaring Him the Messiah, He stated that it had to happen on this very day.

The religious leaders approached Jesus during this public homage to Him. They were angry that He was accepting this Messianic declaration of the people and said to Him, “Master, rebuke thy disciples.”  Jesus responded to them and said, “I tell you that, if these [people] should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”21 Jesus was saying that it was so important that He be proclaimed Messiah on this very day that if the people wouldn’t do it the rocks on the ground would. That is because God’s prophecies and His will always come to pass and He will use whatever means available to accomplish them. The psalmist also refers to this specific day when he wrote: “This is the day which the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Save now, I beseech You, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech You, send now prosperity. Blessed be He that comes in the name of the LORD: we have blessed You out of the house of the LORD.”22

Thus, in order to fulfill this prophecy of Daniel, Jesus was going to be proclaimed the Messiah on this specific day one way or another.

“As Jesus approached the city of Jerusalem on the donkey, He stopped and wept saying: ‘Saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace! But now they are hid from your eyes. For the days shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you, and encircle you, and keep you in on every side, And shall lay you even with the ground, and your children within you; and they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you knew not the time of your visitation.’”23

This saying of Jesus is of the utmost importance because it shows that according to Jesus, the Jews should have known that this was the exact day that the Messiah would visit His people. How could they have known? By correctly interpreting Daniel’s prophecy, along with those prophecies of Isaiah and Zechariah, that foretold not only that the Messiah would be a humble, suffering servant but also the precise day of His arrival. However, the Jewish leaders did not want a suffering Messiah so they only focused on the kingly Messiah prophecies.

I believe this is an important biblical principle that Jesus has put forth to God’s people. We are to study the Bible to ascertain the plans of God for mankind and the timing of those plans. Jesus rebuked the Jews for not knowing when the Messiah would first appear because they didn’t properly study the Old Testament. As Christians we should not miss the timing (although not the specific day) of Jesus’ second coming because He has revealed to us through the prophetic passages of the Bible when that event would occur. The apostle Paul wrote: “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night…But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.”24 This principle is the crux of this book I have written so that Jesus will not rebuke His followers for not knowing the times of His second visitation.

Finally, we come to the death of Messiah to which Daniel’s prophecy speaks. It states that after the Messiah comes, He will be “cut off” or killed. As both Daniel and Isaiah state, the reason for His death will be for the sins of mankind.

Jesus was crucified on Friday the 14th of Nisan, 33 A.D. He died at 3pm25 that day. The New Testament makes it clear that the next day was a Saturday or the Sabbath as the Jews called it: “And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathaea, an honorable counselor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and desired to take the body of Jesus.”26

These two dates, the 10th and 14th of Nisan, have tremendous significance concerning the proclamation of Jesus as the Messiah and in the date of His death.

In the Law that God gave to the Jewish people He ordained them to keep a feast called the Passover. It had its origins in the Jewish nation’s escape from the bondage of Egyptian slavery. God culminated the deliverance of the Jews on the night that He killed all the firstborn male children of the Egyptians. His purpose in this was to show the rebellious Egyptians that He was God and to cause them to free the Jews. On that night, God commanded the Jews living in Egypt to sacrifice an unblemished lamb and spread its blood on the doorposts of their homes. When the Angel of Death came to kill all the firstborn male children in Egypt, he would pass over any homes that had the lamb’s blood on it. Indeed, the Jewish homes that had this blood-covering had their firstborn males spared from death.27

God ordained that the Jews keep the feast of Passover as a remembrance of the night of their deliverance:

“And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month [i.e., Nisan] shall be unto you The beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the Year to you. Speak you unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house…Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: you shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And you shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it…For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where you are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and you shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; you shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.”28

The Jews were to examine their flocks and choose one unblemished lamb on the 10th day of Nisan and kill it on the 14th day of Nisan. The fact that this lamb was to be unblemished meant that it was to have no imperfections.

Jesus fulfilled the purpose of this feast on those exact days. During His “triumphal entry” on the 10th of Nisan, 33 A.D., the people chose Jesus as their Messiah. It is significant that after Jesus came to Jerusalem He went to the Jewish Temple. There He was questioned and examined by the religious leaders to see if they could find any fault or blemish in Him.29 No fault was found in Him and so, like the unblemished lamb, Jesus was sacrificed on the 14th day of Nisan fulfilling the true role of the Passover lamb.

John the Baptist recognized this sacrificial role of Jesus: “John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.”30

The apostle Paul also saw this biblical truth fulfilled in Jesus when he declared, “For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.”31

It was during the Passover meal on Thursday night the 13th of Nisan, 33 A.D. when Jesus instituted a new memorial in which His shed blood would replace the Passover lamb’s blood as atonement for the sins of mankind:

“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is My body. And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink you all of it; For this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”32

When Christians receive communion they are taking part in the Passover meal by eating the bread and drinking the wine that memorializes Jesus Christ as the true Passover Lamb of God who takes away their sins.

After reading through this prophecy of Daniel, I hope you understand why this is such an important Messianic prophecy. It answers the final question of our original six as to when would the Messiah come. This means that no one else can be the Messiah except Jesus Christ because He is the only one who came on the dates specified as necessary by God.

CNBC article agrees that America will decline

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

(March 25, 2010) Yesterday the CNBC website ran a news story titled Health Care Law Signals US Empire Decline? The opening paragraph of this article states, “The passage of the health care law shows that the US empire is declining because it illustrates the fact that people expect the state to take care of them, David Murrin, the co-founder of Emergent Asset Management hedge fund manager, told CNBC.” The article goes on to say, “In their expansionary phase, empires force people to go out, seek risks and fend for themselves, Murrin said, reminding of the dismantling of the British empire after the war, when the National Health Service, which ensures universal health coverage in Britain, was created. This (empire decline) is actually a dead-set course that societies get into and it will happen very quickly I’m afraid, he told ‘Squawk Box Europe.’ ‘As you start to build a system it becomes cohesive because of its success… the fractures in the American system I think are more apparent than ever,’ Murrin added.” The article points out that while America is declining China will be ascending in global influence.

At the same time as the headline above was appearing on the Drudge Report he linked to another story which I consider to have a related import in regards to End-Times prophecy: Israel-US relations hit historic low amid White House blackout … This article reports, “Two separate meetings between President Obama and Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, failed to produce so much as an official photograph as a chill settled over US-Israeli relations and secrecy shrouded any efforts to repair them. The Israeli Prime Minister was due to fly home from Washington after three days marked by Israeli defiance on the issue of settlements and an extraordinary silence maintained by both sides after his three-and-a-half-hour visit to the White House. The meeting was overshadowed by Israeli approval for 20 homes built for Jews in Arab east Jerusalem — a move denounced by one senior US official as ‘exactly what we expect Prime Minister Netanyahu to get control of’. White House staff denied Mr Netanyahu the usual photo opportunities afforded to a visiting leader, issued only the vaguest summary of their talks — let alone a joint statement — and reversed a decision to release an official photo of their meetings.”

These two news stories, one about the decline of America and the other about the deteriorating relations between the U.S. and Israel, appeared on the Drudge Report six days after I wrote the post immediately below this one. (The Decline and Fall of America Redux and Ezekiel 38-39) In that post I pointed out how for years I have believed that something has to happen to disrupt the relationship between Israel and America in order for Ezekiel’s War of Gog and Magog prophecy to come to pass. I believe that America will abandon Israel for either political or economical reasons. With Israel no longer under U.S. military protection the alliance of nations mentioned in Ezekiel would feel unrestrained in attacking Israel. Recent secular news stories seem to indicate that America is headed in that direction.

The Decline and Fall of America Redux and Ezekiel 38-39

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

(March 18, 2010) In September of 2007 I wrote an article for my website titled The Decline and Fall of America. The point of this article was to say that America had to decline in power in order for a prophecy in Ezekiel ch. 38-39 to come to pass. Another article I wrote, The Coming Invasion of Israel, describes the Ezekiel prophecy (usually referred to as the War of Gog and Magog) which declares that an alliance of nations surrounding Israel will attack it yet be supernaturally defeated by God. Scholars are uncertain as to the timing of this war and only agree on the fact that it occurs during the End-Times. In November of 2008 I wrote a post for my blog titled World economic fears and the decline of the United States where I quote an intelligence report that said:

“U.S. economic and political clout will decline over the next two decades and the world will be more dangerous, with food and water scarce and advanced weapons plentiful, U.S. spy agencies projected on Thursday.”

In that post I wrote, “I believe that America has to become either economically or militarily impotent or both and therefore become unwilling or unable to protect Israel. The Bible prophesies of a war where countries surrounding Israel invade it to their own peril in the last days. No non-Arabic country in the world would take on Israel as long as the powerful United States is protecting it. If the U.S. becomes impotent militarily then there is no more deterrent to those who would destroy Israel.”

Recent events have led me to believe that America may not only be on the decline economically but is also becoming politically unwilling to protect Israel. Our current government seems intent on increasing deficit spending which will lead our nation to economic impotence both nationally and globally. The unrelenting obsession with passing healthcare legislation regardless of its deleterious impact on the economy and future of America is perplexing. Environmental and Immigration policies of this government will further weaken the U.S. economy and is equally disconcerting. I can find no logical answers as to why our govenment is disregarding public opinion on these economic issues and pressing ahead even if it means political suicide for many members of the ruling party. It may be that President Obama thinks America’s sins against minorities throughout its history need to be atoned for and one way to do this is to weaken its free market system so that a socialist system might replace it. He did choose to sit under a pastor for twenty years who spoke against America’s faults. Michele Obama made the statement “for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.” in regards to the acceptance and support of her husband’s presidential quest by the American people. However, there may be a much deeper reason why America is pursuing what appears to be economic ruin.

It may be God’s unseen hand that is leading America down this path in order to fulfill His prophetic will concerning the nation of Israel. He used Egypt to fulfill His promise to Abraham (Genesis 15:13). He used the ungodly Chaldeans/Babylonians to perform His judgment: “For, lo, I RAISE up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are not their’s.” (Habakkuk 1:6) I would think that Mary and Joseph had to consider their mandated trip to Bethlehem a tremendous inconvenience and probably didn’t understand what God was doing at the time. But for His prophetic purposes He used the emperor of Rome to fulfill the prophecy that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2/Luke 2:1). Thus, God could be using America’s current administration to fulfill His prophetic purpose for Israel.

America and Israel

There are several news stories reporting President Obama’s Administration’s anger with Israel over plans to build 1600 apartments in East Jerusalem. The following headlines link to these stories:

U.S.-Israeli Ties in ‘Historic’ Crisis“Top U.S. officials have lined up in recent days to condemn the Israeli plan to build 1,600 apartments in east Jerusalem, the sector of the holy city that the Palestinians claim for their future capital. The project caused a storm in Washington because it was announced during Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to the region last week, badly embarrassing the U.S. and complicating its efforts to restart Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. The Palestinians immediately threatened not to join upcoming U.S.-brokered talks meant to jumpstart negotiations after a 14-month breakdown…”

US envoy cancels Mideast trip, Israel feud deepens“A U.S. envoy’s postponement of his Mideast trip appeared Tuesday to deepen one of the worst U.S.-Israeli feuds in memory – even as Israel’s foreign minister signaled his government had no intention of curtailing the contentious construction at the heart of the row…”

Obama runs out of patience with Israel“The US is now said to be demanding substantive concessions from Israel after a warning by the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that he would not take part in talks if the plan to expand the mainly ultra-orthodox Ramat Shlomo settlement went ahead. The row has appeared finally to bring to a head the year-long tensions between the two governments since Barack Obama tried in vain to persuade the Israeli Prime Minister to agree to a total settlement freeze. He was thwarted by Mr Netanyahu who agreed only to a partial 10-month freeze, which did not include East Jerusalem…”

US may be seeking Israel ‘regime change’“The Obama administration’s row with Israel over settlements has prompted some analysts to wonder whether it seeks “regime change,” a new government that can make peace with the Palestinians…”

The Obama Intifada?“Are we seeing the beginning (heaven forbid) of the Obama intifada? The escalating Arab rioting today in Jerusalem and the West Bank is undoubtedly being stoked up by the fact that the Obama administration has turned so viciously against Israel. Doubtless as a result the Arabs now smell victory within their grasp and may now unleash another wave of violence against Israelis…”

If President Obama turns from Israel in favor of the Muslims it may lead to a policy to where we would no longer protect Israel at any cost. A more likely scenario is that America will become economically unable to protect Israel. Either way the War of Gog and Magog will take place. How soon may be determined by the fate of the United States of America.

Does the land of Israel belong to the “Israel of God” (the Christian Church)?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

(March 10, 2010) There are Christians who believe that the Christian Church has replaced the Jewish nation of Israel which God created in the Old Testament. They quote the apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians where he called Christians the “Israel of God” (Galatians 6:16) and Abraham’s seed  “28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”  (Galatians 3:28-29)  They believe that since the Jews as a nation rejected Jesus as their Messiah the covenants God made with them in the Old Testament are no longer in effect. Therefore, the Jews of today have no God-given right to the land of Israel.

I had a debate on the liberal Sojourners website over who owns the land of Israel in God’s eyes. Two different posters invoked Galatians to suggest that the Christian Church has replaced the Jewish people/nation:

[poster #1]: “ Remember Galatians 3:28, which specifically mandated equality and made us *all* part of Abraham’s seed.”

[poster #2]: “Does God say in His Word that the land of Israel belongs to the descendants of Abraham? Isn’t it possible, in view of Galatians, that the land actually belongs to faithful Christians, Jews and Muslims who desire to please Him by faith.”

I came across a poster on another blog who subscribes to Replacement Theology and who wrote, “There will be no third temple, since God destroyed it forever to be replaced by the True High Priest entering Heaven to offer His shed blood. As for ‘replacement theology’, Jesus said the vineyard would be taken from the Jews and given to another nation bearing its fruits. Matt. 21:43 Sounds like replacement to me.”

The parables Jesus spoke in ch. 21 of Matthew have nothing whatsoever to do with the land of Israel. Jesus is clearly speaking of the Jewish religious leaders who rejected God’s plan of salvation which comes through His Son, Jesus the Messiah:

“28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. 29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. 30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. 31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him. 33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: 34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. 35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. 37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. 38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. 39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. 40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? 41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. 42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? 43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.” (Matthew 21:28-43)

In light of these Replacement Theological positions how would they interpret the following scripture passage. In Genesis God made this promise to Abraham:

“14 And Jehovah said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward and southward and eastward and westward: 15 for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.” (Genesis 13:14-15)

God promised the land to Abraham’s seed or offspring forever.

The following question illustrates the fallacy of the Replacement Theology position:

If the the land of Israel belongs to Abraham’s seed and if the Christian Church (the Israel of God) has replaced the Jewish nation of Israel then doesn’t this mean that the land of Israel belongs neither to the Jews or the Arabs but to the Christian Church?

You would be hard-pressed to find any adherent to Replacement Theology answer Yes to that question. As a matter of fact Knox Theological Seminary in 2002 issued an Open Letter stating that Christians, who constitute the “true Israel”, are not entitled to the land of Israel (nor is any other group according to this letter – sec. VI). Yet God’s promise in Genesis is clear: “the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.” Who then is the seed/offspring that God promised this land to forever? It has to be either the Jews or the Christians. The Arabs are not covered in this covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (Genesis ch. 15, ch. 17, ch. 28) The argument that says the covenant is no longer valid for the Jews since they rejected Jesus Christ cannot be applied to Abraham’s Christian seed. We accepted Jesus as the Messiah so therefore the covenant is still in effect for Abraham’s offspring and thus according to Replacement Theology the land belongs to the Church. This illustrates both the scriptural and logical absurdity of Replacement Theology.

The Church is the Spiritual Israel while the Jews in the land of Israel constitute the Temporal Israel. The land of Israel was promised to the physical offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Jews. And as God’s word says, “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” and therefore the land of Israel belongs to the Jews. (Romans ch.11)

Earthquakes; Global Tax & Money; Government Monitoring; Islamic Ire; Doomsday Clock

Monday, March 1st, 2010

(March 1, 2010) In the wake of the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, MSNBC has an article on the increase of earthquakes around the world. (Big quake question: Are they getting worse?) The author writes, “One scientist, however, says that relative to the time period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, Earth has been more active over the past 15 years or so.” He quotes a geophysicist as saying, “We still do not know the reason for this yet. Could simply be the natural temporal variation of the stress field in the earth’s lithosphere.” (The lithosphere is the outer solid part of the Earth.)” Jesus gave signs to His disciples to look for when the end is near, “3 As He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the close of the age?’ 4 And Jesus answered them, ‘Take heed that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: 8 all this is but the beginning of the labor pains.” (Matthew 24:3-8) Leading into the End-Times Jesus said that false religious leaders, wars, famines, and earthquakes would increase in various places. He likened these events to labor pains which means they will become increasingly more painful and occur closer and closer together. The recent earthquake activity may be a precursor to what Jesus says will happen before the end.

Global Economy

The Prime Minister of England said that a global tax is near. (Global bank tax near, says Brown) The article states, “Gordon Brown said on Wednesday the world’s leading economies were close to agreeing a global bank tax, amid hopes in Downing Street that a deal can be concluded at the G20 summit in Canada in June.”  U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi endorses a global tax on stock trades and other financial transactions. (Pelosi Endorses ‘Global’ Tax on Stocks, Bonds, and other Financial Transactions)

In a related story the International Monetary Fund proposed a new global reserve currency. (Head of IMF Proposes New Reserve Currency) The article states, “the head of the International Monetary Fund, suggested Friday that the organization one day might be called upon to provide countries with a global reserve currency that would serve as an alternative to the U.S. dollar.”

The London Telegraph Newspaper economics commentator, Edmund Conway, recently wrote a column titled “I’m Dreaming of a Cashless Christmas” in which he said “This is a bold statement to make: currency has been an integral part of our world, in one way or another, since 3,000BC. But the simple fact is that we can survive without it. In fact, abolishing notes and coins could make the world and its economies far less dysfunctional.” (I’m Dreaming of a Cashless Christmas)  Some of the comments that followed his article brought up the issues of the “Mark of the Beast” and the “New World Order”. This caused Mr. Conway to write a followup article: (The New World Disorder) “A couple of weeks ago I wrote a column about the possibility that at some point in the future we may abandon cash in favour of electronic payments. I expected to receive a pretty healthy dose of criticism for what was a pretty radical suggestion; what I hadn’t expected was the direction in which that criticism would soon flow. Within a few comments, I was being accused of being part of a vast global conspiracy to create a New World Order (NWO, I gather one should shorten it to) in which the absence of cash would be a key factor. Well, to be more precise, the end of hard currency would also coincide with the introduction of a world government, a world currency and so on – you get the general idea.” He goes on to say he is not part of any conspiracy to “replace national governments with an international super-authority, though I’m flattered some of our readers believe I would ever be considered by the authorities to be worth involving in such an enterprise.”  However, Mr. Conway makes an observation about possible collusion amongst the world’s governments that I believe overlooks the bigger picture:

“And yet rumours of an NWO are still more pervasive than ever before. Why? In part, because members of governments around the world do talk to each other a lot, most often in open and usually well-reported fora (ie the IMF, UN, EC, Davos, the G7 and G20 etc). The whole premise of many of these multilateral meetings is precisely in order to forge a more internationalist style of politics where every country’s leadership thinks not merely of their own voters but also of the interests of overseas nations when they create policy. But this push is less an attempt to create an NWO than it is to avert the opposite – the threat of war. Remember – these institutions were set up in the wake of the Second World War, when politicians were trying to pull every lever they could to ensure there wouldn’t be a third war. So the conspiracy theorists are right: there is a push towards international government – but to suggest they could overreach each nation’s individual national interests is really endowing them with far more capability than they have…

Throughout my time covering economics and politics for a number of newspapers, I have come over time to the conclusion not that there is a carefully orchestrated global plan being masterminded by leading politicians (be it to create a NWO or, in some other way, to dupe people out of their liberty or prosperity) but that the politicians and policymakers have less of a clue about what to do than the rest of us. It’s been obvious every step of the way through this financial crisis – and that to me is actually rather scarier than the idea of a conspiracy. Are these people, who have stumbled their way from one disaster to another, really capable of engineering a global conspiracy, overturning peoples’ deep local tribalism? Not a chance.”

I agree with Mr. Conway that the politicians of the world are incapable of uniting the earth under one “flag”. However, the Bible declares that one man, unlike any other human who has ever lived, will by demonic power unify a large part of the earth’s governments under his administration:  “4 And they worshipped the dragon [the Devil] which gave power unto the beast [the Antichrist] and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” (Revelation 13:4-8)

Whether or not these economic policies take place, it is just another indicator of the technological state of the world which allows for the global monitoring of financial transactions and the unification of the global economy. The Bible declares in the last days that some type of global economic system will be in place and run by the Antichrist and his government. “16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” (Revelation 13:16-18)

Government Monitoring

There have been some recent news stories (just like the global economic  monitoring that is now technologically possible) about government monitoring in other areas of citizen’s lives. In Australia, the government has monitored Australian’s waste usage with microchips placed in their trash cans. (Spy chips hidden in 2.5 MILLION dustbins)  The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency said they may use a software technology called Einstein to monitor Internet communications on private networks in order to combat cyber attacks. (Feds weigh expansion of Internet monitoring)  Neither of these stories necessarily impute a sinister motive on the part of these governments in using the technology available. The point is that the technology is available for the first time in history to closely monitor the habits and behaviors of human beings. One day an evil government will use this techonology for its own evil designs.

Islamic Wrath

Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi has called for Jihad against the country of Switzerland because of that country’s ban on the building of Islamic minarets. (Kadhafi calls for jihad against Switzerland over minaret ban) Kadhafi stated, “It is against unbelieving and apostate Switzerland that jihad ought to be proclaimed by all means…Jihad against Switzerland, against Zionism, against foreign aggression is not terrorism.” This is not the isolated rambling of a rogue dictator as Hamas, Hezbollah, Iranian Leaders, and Saudi Arabian Wahhabism have illustrated over and over again. The one world religious system spoken of in Revelation ch. 13 may refer to Islam’s attempt to convert the rest of the world to their faith and laws.

Doomsday Clock; Supernova

The Doomsday Clock, an invention of scientists originally used to illustrate how close the world is to nuclear devastation and now includes climate devastation, was set back recently because of the policies of President Obama. (Doomsday clock is moved one minute further AWAY from fateful midnight… thanks to Obama)   This article reports, “The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947, two years after the U.S dropped the first atomic bombs on Japan in World War II. It was originally set at seven minutes to midnight. It has been altered 19 times since then by the Bulletin’s scientific board. The latest recorded time was two minutes to midnight in 1953 as the Cold War heated up between the U.S and Soviet Union.” I find it ironic that this clock was created in 1947 because in November of that year the United Nations voted to create the nation of Israel. The next year on May 14, 1948 the nation of Israel was born. This event started the real Doomsday clock. God laid out a timeframe in the Book of Ezekiel:

“1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, 2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. 3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. 4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. 8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them. 9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army. 11 Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel.” (Ezekiel 37:1-11)

In 1948 I believe that God raised the Jews from their “graves” and returned them to the land of Israel as a dry, secular nation. The next stage in the process involves putting sinews or muscles on the nation of Israel. This is mere speculation on my part but it may be that the powerful Israeli military may be a partial fulfillment of this part of Ezekiel’s prophecy. Muscles are an indicator of the strength of a body and the Israeli army has been an indicator of the strength of the Jews’ will to survive and live.

The next phase of the dry bones vision stated that the nation of Israel would have flesh and skin put on it. The Bible does not speak highly of human flesh. It uses “flesh” as a metaphor for our sinful natures, which try to please God by good works or rebel against Him by evil works. I believe it is possible that when the Jews rebuild the third or Tribulation Temple, this will fulfill the flesh stage of their rebirth as a nation. They will believe they are honoring God with their new Temple and sacrifices yet the Antichrist will actually be using them for his purposes.

This brings us to the final stage of the dry bones vision. God declared that He will put His breath or Spirit in the nation of Israel and they will be His people and He will be their God. This will take place at the second coming of Jesus Christ. The prophet Zechariah spoke of this event:

“And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.” (Zechariah 12:10)

This passage is a reference to the second coming of Jesus Christ when the whole world will look on Him whom they pierced. God at that time will pour out His Spirit upon Israel and they will receive God’s Servant Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

The last part of this vision of Ezekiel’s declares that God’s Servant will be King over the Jews and the land of Israel. Again, this refers to the Messianic Kingdom over which Jesus will reign.

Thus, I believe the real Doomsday Clock began ticking with the creation of the modern state of Israel.

(February 28, 2010)  Speaking in Poland on the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu said that modern Israel fulfills the “Dry Bones” prophecy of Ezekiel ch. 37. (Netanyahu: Ezekiel 37 Fulfilled in Israel)  He declared, “Armed with the Jewish spirit, the justice of man, and the vision of the prophets, we sprouted new branches and grew deep roots. Dry bones became covered with flesh, a spirit filled them, and they lived and stood on their own feet, as Ezekiel prophesied:

Then He said to me, ‘Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!’ Therefore prophesy and say to them, thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves and bring you into the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up from your graves.’”

I believe the creation of the modern state of Israel in 1948 was the beginning of the fulfillment of Ezekiel’s Dry Bones vision. I discuss this in ch. 18 of my book Even at the Doors:

The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel began his ministry around the year 593 B.C.  God had given to him several visions concerning the fate of the Jews and the nation of Israel. I believe that one of these visions is the key to the timing of God’s plans for the last days:

11 Then He said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts. 12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O My people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up out of your graves, 14 And shall put My Spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD. 15 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, 16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and for all the house of Israel his companions: 17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. 18 And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these? 19 Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand. 20 And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes. 21 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: 22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all. 23 Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be My people, and I will be their God. 24 And David My servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one Shepherd: they shall also walk in My judgments, and observe My statutes, and do them. 25 And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children’s children for ever: and My servant David shall be their Prince for ever. 26 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set My sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. 27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 28 And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.” (Ezekiel 37:1-28)

In this vision God reveals to Ezekiel the future of the Jewish nation Israel. He shows Ezekiel a valley full of very dry bones that represent Israel. God speaks to these bones and tells them that He is going to put breath into them so that they may come to life. However, this process is going to occur in stages.

First, He will cause the bones to come up out of their graves. Then He will put sinews or muscles on them. Next, He will cause flesh to grow upon them and then cover them with skin. Lastly, He will put His breath or Spirit upon them that they may come to life.

Some Christians adhere to the doctrine of Replacement Theology which denies that the Jews have a right to live in the land of Israel. This teaching states that the modern nation of Israel is not a fulfillment of prophecy because the Jews are in unbelief when it comes to accepting Jesus as the Messiah. I illustrated how God still keeps His covenants with the Jews even while they are in unbelief. (See ch. 17 – Replacement Theology) It is interesting that the description Ezekiel gives of these bones that represent the Jewish nation of Israel is that they are very dry. In other words, they are spiritually dry or dead. It isn’t until the end of the process that they become spiritually alive. That the Jews do not currently believe that Jesus is the Messiah is actually a fulfillment of this part of Ezekiel’s prophecy.

God says that He will begin the process of restoring the Jews to the land of Israel by taking them up out of their graves and bringing them into the land of Israel. The metaphor God uses here probably refers to the “graves” that the Jews were in when He dispersed them to the nations around the world. He declares that He will take them from every nation and bring them back to the land of Israel. However, I believe that there is also a literal aspect to this metaphor.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the Nazi government of Germany tried to exterminate the Jewish people from the face of the earth. They did succeed in killing more than 6,000,000 Jews before the world stopped them. The Allied armies discovered the concentration camps and the gas ovens and mass graves that contained these Jews. Two years after World War II ended, the countries of the world, via the United Nations, gave the land of Israel back to the Jews. In this case, the Jews were literally taken from their graves and brought back to the land of Israel.

There has been a debate in certain theological circles as to why God allowed the Holocaust to occur. Some say that it was the Jews’ punishment for rejecting God’s Son, Jesus Christ, as the Messiah. I do not believe that at all. Rather I believe the Holocaust was an attempt by Satan to thwart God’s end-times plans.

Several times in the Bible just before God was going to fulfill His plans, Satan tried to stop them. God was going to use Moses to deliver the Jews from bondage in Egypt. Satan’s plan was to have Moses killed as a baby by inciting the pharaoh to issue a decree ordering the Jews to kill all their newborn male babies. This tactic failed and Moses did fulfill God’s plan. Next, God sent His Son to deliver humanity from its bondage to sin. Satan incited King Herod to kill all the newborn male babies in Bethlehem in order to kill Jesus. This attempt failed and Jesus fulfilled the mission that God gave Him. I believe that Satan knew God was about to fulfill His plan of bringing the Jews back to the land of Israel in 1948 and used the Nazis to try and stop this from occurring. Again, Satan’s diabolical plan failed and God brought the Jews back to Israel after eighteen hundred years. Though Satan may have been behind the Holocaust, he found willing human servants in the Nazi regime. (Likewise, I believe Satan is still trying to hinder God’s plan through the conflict between the Jews and the Arabs. The fact that many Arabs want to “drive the Jews into the sea” is illustrative of his influence to harm God’s chosen people).

Thus, in 1948 I believe that God raised the Jews from their “graves” and returned them to the land of Israel as a dry, secular nation.

Mr. Netanyahu is correct in relating Ezekiel’s prophecy to the modern state of Israel. However, the complete fulfillment won’t occur until the second coming of Jesus Christ.

European Union Says Divide Jerusalem

In December Sweden proposed an initiative to persuade European Union members to recognize East Jeruslem as the capital of Palestine. (Israel slams Sweden’s Jerusalem division plan) One of the End-Times judgments of God states, “1 For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, 2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat, and I will enter into judgment with them there, on account of My people and My heritage Israel, because they have scattered them among the nations, and have divided up My land.” (Joel 3:1-2) God will judge those nations who divide up His land, a land that He gave to His chosen people, the Jews.

In the King James Bible Jerusalem is mentioned 670 times in the Old Testament. Jerusalem is mentioned 144 times in the New Testament. Jerusalem is mentioned 0 (zero) times in the Qur’an. God gave the land to the Jews with an unconditional covenant He made with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.  As Ezekiel prophesied above; “And [I] shall put My Spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land.” (Ezekiel 37:14) God will put the Jews in their own land, Israel! Those who oppose the Jews’ right to the land of Israel may find themselves opposed to the will of God and may one day fall under His judgment.
