Two AP writers suggest world is spinning out of control

(June 21, 2008)  Associated Press reporters Alan Fram and Eileen Putman wrote an article suggesting world events are spiraling out of control. (Everything seemingly is spinning out of control) They write, “Midwestern levees are bursting. Polar bears are adrift. Gas prices are skyrocketing. Home values are abysmal. Air fares, college tuition and health care border on unaffordable. Wars without end rage in Iraq, Afghanistan and against terrorism.” Their observations are not limited to the United States as they say in the article, “Recent natural disasters around the world dwarf anything afflicting the U.S. Consider that more than 69,000 people died in the China earthquake, and that 78,000 were killed and 56,000 missing from the Myanmar cyclone.” However they quote a historian as saying that the world has been through troubling times before yet survived. They conclude the article with, “Why the vulnerability? After all, this is the 21st century, not a more primitive past when little in life was assured. Surely people know how to fix problems now.
Maybe. And maybe this is what the 21st century will be about — a great unraveling of some things long taken for granted.”

The problem is that not all human suffering can be alleviated. Mankind cannot control devastating weather events. Warfare has always been a part of the human experience. Population growth will continue to exact demands on economies, natural resources, and the necessities for the sustentation of life. Eventually there are only two scenarios for the human race. They revolve around whether there is a God or there isn’t a God. If God doesn’t exist then humans are left to their own devices. Other species have become extinct for various reasons. There is nothing to prevent the extinction of the human race if we are at the mercy of violent weather patterns, limited natural resources, and the ability to destroy the world through technological means such as nuclear war. However, if there is a God then He alone has the power to preserve the earth and its inhabitants. The Bible declares that the world is going to go through horrific times in the future. This will be part of a final judgment by God on a rebellious humanity. This judgment would destroy the human race if God wanted it to but the Bible states that He will not destroy the earth’s population. In speaking of the end of the current age Jesus said, “21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.” (Matthew 24:21-22) The world will experience ecological, economical, and governmental upheavals in the future. The good news is that God is in control and those who live their lives for Him will be saved.
